How Do I Get Rid of Hot Tub Foam

As a hot tub gets more use and people are in and out regularly, dissolved solids that don't belong in the water begin to build up causing the hot tub to foam. Some of these dissolved solid include: body oils, shampoo, soaps, lotion, and detergents.  When the level of these solids reach a certain point, they rise to the water surface, producing the foam we all hate.

At Suntek Pools and Spas, we'll give you detailed direction on HOW to get rid of Hot Tub Foam.  For a quick fix, we offer Leisure Time Foam Down, a non-oily concentrated foam suppressant.  This product differs from other foam suppressants because it was specially designed for use in hot water.  It has an easy flip-top lid for accurate and direct application.  It is important to note that consistent and excessive foaming indicates water problems.  If your hot tub water is still filled with foam, stop by our Farmingdale location with samples of your water.  Our water testing technicians will help you determine the correct plan of action.

How To Prevent Hot Tub Foam
  1. Rinse off before getting in the hot tub to wash off all soap, makeup and other body residue.
  2. Once in the water, avoid going under water.  Long hair contains plenty of chemicals that will definitely affect the water.
  3. Make sure all bathing suits are clean and rinsed before entering the water.
  4. Don't spill drinks in the hot tub!
  5. Drain the hot tub regularly to ensure the freshest water.

Labor Day Weekend is here!  Now it's time to making sure you're pool is ready for the party.  Are you having a pool party this long weekend? Pool parties give you an excuse to invite everyone you know over to enjoy your swimming pool. It's very important to make sure safety doesn't get pushed to the side in all the poolside fun.

According to the American Red Cross, knowing how to handle an emergency is key to safety.  Home Pool Essentials: Maintenance and Safety is an online course developed by the Red Cross and the National Swimming Pool Foundation to help teach pool and spa owners what to do in case of an emergency.

Suntek Pools and Spas
Here's other safety tips recommended by the Red Cross:
  • When supervising children avoid distractions.
  • Never leave a young child unattended near water, and don't trust another child to watch that child.
  • Teach children to ask permission to go near and in water.
  • All pools should have appropriate barriers.
  • If a child goes missing, check the water first. Each second counts in preventing drowning.
  • Weak or inexperienced swimmers should wear floatation devices. (ie. life jackets, floats)
  • Know and understand how to respond to an emergency, and who to call for help. (CPR Skills)
  • Always have life saving gear handy. This include life jackets, ring buoy, rope, pole or other floatation objects.

Four Ways To Use A Hot Tub For Therapy!

Many experts agree that Hydrotherapy is one of the best and most natural ways to heal and relax the human body.  When relaxing in a hot tub, the warm water causes the blood vessels to dilates, thus releasing tension in the body and allowing for easier blood flow.

Suntek Spas
Below are several condition that can be aided by hot tub use:

Arthritis
The heated water helps ease the effect of arthritis by soothing aching joints while the buoyancy of the water releases pressure.

Back Pain
Heat helps release the tension in your back muscles by warming, stretching out and relaxing.  Similar to the effect of warm water on arthritis, the buoyancy helps relieve pressure on the vertebrae.

Insomnia
I'm sure most of you have heard that sleep is one of the most important factors to help maintain your overall health and well being.  After you get out of the hot tub, your body temperature will begin to drop back to normal.  This can trigger and promote induced sleepiness.

Foot Pain
Of all your body parts, your feet take the biggest beating ever day.  Having to support the weight of your body will put extra stress on them.  Hot tubs can help release the stress with the combination of heat, water buoyancy and massage jets.  Who doesn't love a foot massage?

Hot Tubs are great for people of all ages!  They can help loosen tight muscles, relax stress on bones and joints, and induce a peaceful atmosphere!   Stop what you're doing today and visit our Farmingdale Showroom!  For more information please visit our website www.suntekpoolsandspas.com.

Pool Myths You'll Be Shocked to Learn the Truth!

In the great world of pool ownership, many myths and urban legends circulate the pool community. Here is a few of the most popular untruthful myths that interrupt the pool community as a whole, the truth shall set you free!

Myth #1: You must wait an hour after eating before swimming.
Not entirely true. The idea that jumping in the pool immediately after eating will surely lead to a life-threatening cramp seems to have first showed up in an old-fashioned scouting manual from the early 20th century, Scouting for Boys. However the science is unsupported. There has never been a reported case of drowning due to a post meal cramp in the history of the United States.
In fact the action of swimming does focus the heart’s precious blood to the muscles and away from the stomach during swimming, which can make digestion difficult and even lead to cramping. The idea of being sunk by a turkey and cheese sandwich is exaggerated, to say the least.

Myth #2: There are pool chemicals that reveal urine in pool water.
The fact is there aren’t any. No manufacturer has accomplished the goal to create a chemical additive that surrounds someone with a bright-colored proof to prove that you have a tinkler in your pool. Very funny concept, but only found in movies and television.
Still worried? Simply remove everyone out of your pool and shock it. Also, maybe you want to reevaluate some of your friendships.

Myth #3: That heavy chemical smell is an indication of a clean pool.
That smell you smell is actually the opposite. The correct way to have a disinfected pool has no strong chemical smell. That stinky odor common to many pools is actually due to chloramines. Chloramines are the byproducts of chlorine’s response to contaminants brought over by swimmers.

What do you contaminants include? Perspiration, urine, body oils and cosmetics, that’s just a few to name. The smell may indicate the need for more chemicals, usually more chlorine.

Myth #4: Chlorine gives people red-eye during swimming.
When coming out of that pool we’ve experienced or at least seen those scary red angry eyes from the pool. The irritated red eyes are usually blamed on the overdose of chlorine in the pool, most of time that’s never the case.

What cases it then? Swimming pools can for sure provide irritations, the usual suspect is actually chloramines, a by-product of chlorine, it most likely comes from an under-chlorinated pool. Pools that sustain a normal level of chlorination will not cause such symptoms.

Best Swimming Workout: Lose Body Fat in the Pool

With the summer still in full gear, it’s still not too late to find a workout that can get you in shape to look good and feel good in your swim wear. To help you shape up and slim down for your swim wear, look no further than your own pool! Believe it or not, a swimming workout is the most effective workout to burn calories fast and boost your metabolism quickly, while simultaneously strengthening every muscle in your body. An easy swim allows the average person to burn roughly 500 calories in an hour and by picking up the intensity, you can easily shave off an additional 200 calories. Moreover, since water is much more denser than air, your body has to work even harder to move around, really giving your body a great workout.
Pool Workout Tips
Now before you jump right into the pool, know your limits and plan your workout accordingly. If your new to the water workout scene and you start your workout at your highest intensity level, you may feel defeated in just a few minutes. Remember that water is an element that your body has to be trained to adjust to since it requires your cardiovascular system and muscles to function differently in water than they do on land. The key to a successful swimming workout is splitting your workout into shorter segments, while changing the type of stroke and intensity level for each new segment. If you really set your mind to it and keep up with the workouts, you’ll be able to shape up and slim down for your swim wear in no time.

Check out the full article describing a great beginner’s workout and a detailed explanation of each stroke here: http://www.womenshealthmag.com/style/swim-workout.

The Benefits of Owning A Swimming Pool!

When homeowners are deciding whether or not to build a swimming pool in their backyard, the pros and cons are weighed.

Owning a swimming pool in your backyard brings way more benefits then not having one, here are some clear cut reasons why you should get a swimming pool, if you haven’t done so yet:

  1. Keep The Kid’s Home – You can find on multiple articles, family specialists say it’s a lot safer and better having your kids stay home and spend family time in comparison to going to their friends all the time. Knowing your kids are there and their friends constantly want to go to your house to swim is a great thing to have.
  2. Home Improvement Value – Now a lot of people sometimes think adding a pool won’t add value to your home, in some regions that might be true but an article on msn money read that the NAR (The National Association of Realtors) recently came out saying that an in ground fiberglass and concrete pool will increase the value of a home on average 5 to 6 percent.
  3. Fitness/Health - This should be obvious and a lot of customers get rectangle shaped pools not only for aesthetics reason but also because they’re good pools to workout and do laps in. I’ve heard some older customers say their doctor had recommended swimming for health reason and swimming is a good physical activity.
  4. Family Events and Gatherings – This might not be for everyone and some people prefer their privacy. But, whether your inviting clients, or family and friends over, it’s a great way to engage in social activity without leaving your own home.

2013 MLB All-Star Game

Tonight Major League Baseball's best athletes will head to Citi Field in Queens, New York City, home of the New York Mets on Tuesday, July 16th 2013.  This will be the 84th annual MLB All-Star Game.  the Mets have not hosted an All-Star Game since 1964, in their inaugural season at Shea Stadium.  Citi Field was completed as a replacement to Shea Stadium on March 29, 2009.

The exciting Home-Run Derby was hosted last night by David Wright, of the New York Mets and Robinson Cano, of the New York Yankees, making it even more exciting for local fans.  The AL and NL All-Star teams have been finalized in a live announcement last Saturday.  The starters were selected by the fans and the rest of the roster was decided by the players and All-Star managers.  Each team will be made up of 35 players, all 30 teams get at least one representative in the All-Star Game.  The events at Citi Field promise to be entertaining, and the always important home-field advantage in the World Series will be on the line.

The game scheduled for 8:00 pm will host the world's best baseball talent and should be a fun game to watch.  New York Mets starting pitcher, Matt Harvey will get the start for the National League Side!  How do you think he's going to match up against the big bats of the American League?

Pool Safety at a Summer Pool Party!

Although pool party are a great way to celebrate the amazing summer weather, it's very important to take the appropriate safety precautions.  According to poolsafety.gov, there are, on average, about 4,200 pool related injuries to children younger than 15 each year!

Make sure an adult is monitoring the pool at all times!
On average 390 children drown a year, of which, 75% are under the age of 5.  The number one cause of children drowning is because no one is watching them.  It may not be intentional, but adults around the party watching the children often think that someone else is responsible for watching the water.
Full Infographic via Poolfence.com
We recommend having a safety talk with the children before they get in the pool, as well as, either hiring a lifeguard or designating a responsible adult as the pool watcher for the day.

Have a great 4th of July weekend, and remember to be safe!

New Spa Covers Improve Energy Efficiency

If you Spa cover has deteriorated over time your hot tub is losing heat and costing you money!  If your old cover has become too heavy, this could indicate that it is water-logged.  Deteriorated, water-logged or ripped spa covers are using TOO MUCH energy, costing you extra money to heat the water.

Your Spa cover should be a vacuum heat seal to trap the heat and prevent it from leaving the hot tub.  A high quality replacement spa cover will not only save energy, it will also last longer, be more resistant to water absorption, and improve the beauty of your spa.

Give Suntek Pools and Spas today and we'll be glad to help you find the perfectly sized and fitted spa cover! Remember to connect with us on Facebook, Linked Here, for pool and spa tips, products and yes, some fun stuff too!

Is It Safe to Open Your Eyes Underwater?

Anyone who has been in the pool or hot tub will tell you that at one time or another they've opened their eyes underwater.  But this brings up a bigger question - is it safe to open your eyes underwater?

Many believe that he chlorine in the water causes eye redness, but the water's pH level is actually the cause!  The pH level measures how acidic the water is, if the pH is above or below the correct range they your eyes get irritated.

According to studies, your eyes won't experience any long term harm due to pH levels if you open them underwater (Unless the water's pH or other chemicals extremely out of balance).  Although, water with levels of infectious bacteria may be something to worry about.  Exposure to infectious bacteria can lead to an eye infection.  We recommend wearing Google if you are swimming in a public pool, unknown pool or other unknown water.
