Labor Day Weekend is here! Now it's time to making sure you're pool is ready for the party. Are you having a pool party this long weekend? Pool parties give you an excuse to invite everyone you know over to enjoy your swimming pool. It's very important to make sure safety doesn't get pushed to the side in all the poolside fun.
According to the American Red Cross, knowing how to handle an emergency is key to safety. Home Pool Essentials: Maintenance and Safety is an online course developed by the Red Cross and the National Swimming Pool Foundation to help teach pool and spa owners what to do in case of an emergency.
Here's other safety tips recommended by the Red Cross:
- When supervising children avoid distractions.
- Never leave a young child unattended near water, and don't trust another child to watch that child.
- Teach children to ask permission to go near and in water.
- All pools should have appropriate barriers.
- If a child goes missing, check the water first. Each second counts in preventing drowning.
- Weak or inexperienced swimmers should wear floatation devices. (ie. life jackets, floats)
- Know and understand how to respond to an emergency, and who to call for help. (CPR Skills)
- Always have life saving gear handy. This include life jackets, ring buoy, rope, pole or other floatation objects.
