The East River + Pool = Awesome!

With the temperatures rising this summer, everyone is looking for a place to cool off.  This is sometimes a hard task to accomplish in a busy city.  Three young, New York based architects would like people to be able to swim in Manhattan’s East River, but the water is too dirty.  These young architects have developed a plan to create a pool that floats on the river.  Their design utilizes walls that act as a passive filtration system to make the water suitable for humans.  The water will eventually be passed back into the river in a cleaner state.  While this pool couldn’t clean the entire river, its designers expect it to process approximately 500,000 gallons of water each day.

In honor of its shape, the project has been named the + Pool.  Each leg of the cross shaped pool will serve as a separate function including one for children, sports, laps and lounging.  In 2010, the organizers launched a campaign on a crowdfunding website called Kickstater and surpassed their goal of $25,00 to raise $40,000 from 1,200 different supporters.  In addition, they were also approached by a variety of organizations, including global engineering firm Arup and Columbia University, each hoping to partner with them on research and development.  This summer the group plans to run tests in the East River, floating the 35x35 foot test pool to gather more information about the water and to see how the current filtration design performs.  The original plan included designs to have the walls perform all of the filtration and sanitation, although it looks like the final design will incorporate mechanical technologies built inside the walls to help with the process.  Because the project is still in development we do not have complete access to knowledge of the exact technologies being investigated.  This project has been receiving 100 percent support and help from a city that wants to see more people back on the water front.  This revolutionary concept combines new technology, eco-friendly principles and a service to the community, which is why it has received support from the city, its citizens and worldwide investors.

The Best Pool Games for Kids' Parties!

There's no better way to end a school year than a pool party!!  It's a great way for the kids (and the parents) to enjoy the sun and outdoors.  That's why we've put together a list of some of the BEST pool party games out there!  Don't forget, all of these games require the watchful presence of an adult to ensure water safety.

Sharks and Minnows
One player is the Shark, while the rest of the group are the minnows.  While starting at different ends of the pools, the minnows have to try and get to the sharks side without getting heard.  If the shark hears even the smalls splash, they're unleashed into the water to tag the closest minnow.  The kid that gets tagged becomes the shark in the next round.

Marco Polo
One of the most popular pool games ever! One player is blindfolded and yells "Marco" and the rest of the group shouts back "Polo". The blindfolded player tries to listen for the polo and attempt to tag them.  The kid that is tagged becomes marco in the next round.

Musical Pool
Similar to Musical Chairs, you use rafts, floats or tubes.  All players start inside the pool swimming to music, with one less floatation device than the number of kids. Once the music stops kids need to grab a float to stay in! Kids are eliminated one by one.
