With the temperatures rising this summer, everyone is looking for a place to cool off. This is sometimes a hard task to accomplish in a busy city. Three young, New York based architects would like people to be able to swim in Manhattan’s East River, but the water is too dirty. These young architects have developed a plan to create a pool that floats on the river. Their design utilizes walls that act as a passive filtration system to make the water suitable for humans. The water will eventually be passed back into the river in a cleaner state. While this pool couldn’t clean the entire river, its designers expect it to process approximately 500,000 gallons of water each day.
In honor of its shape, the project has been named the + Pool. Each leg of the cross shaped pool will serve as a separate function including one for children, sports, laps and lounging. In 2010, the organizers launched a campaign on a crowdfunding website called Kickstater and surpassed their goal of $25,00 to raise $40,000 from 1,200 different supporters. In addition, they were also approached by a variety of organizations, including global engineering firm Arup and Columbia University, each hoping to partner with them on research and development. This summer the group plans to run tests in the East River, floating the 35x35 foot test pool to gather more information about the water and to see how the current filtration design performs. The original plan included designs to have the walls perform all of the filtration and sanitation, although it looks like the final design will incorporate mechanical technologies built inside the walls to help with the process. Because the project is still in development we do not have complete access to knowledge of the exact technologies being investigated. This project has been receiving 100 percent support and help from a city that wants to see more people back on the water front.
